Friends at a San Rafael, California high school heard about every cannabis lover’s dream: an area of abandoned weed plants that had been left behind by a careful farmer. Excited about finding their proverbial pot of gold, the friends made a plan to meet outside of the school at 4:20 pm before embarking on their adventure. The friends searched ruthlessly, but were never able to locate the supposed abandoned plants, and returned from their journey empty-handed.

The students began to refer to their search as 420, based on the time that they met up to begin their search. The term caught on in California, and then made its way into the culture of weed enthusiasts around the country, and around the world.

Today, 420 isn’t so much used as a term for weed, rather, it’s used to mark a day when pot lovers can come together and celebrate all that THC and CBD have to offer.
